Bishop Auckland is a lively market town in the Vale of Durham, known as the gateway to Weardale and home of The Auckland Project.

Its fascinating heritage spans at least 2,000 years and it is home to Auckland Palace, which was the palace of Durham’s Prince Bishop for almost 900 years. More recently, Stan Laurel of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy lived in the town during his childhood.

Newest additions to the cultural attractions in the town include Auckland Tower, The Spanish Gallery, and the summer time spectacular – Kynren. which all come under The Auckland Project.

Bishop Auckland has a beautiful Town Hall, home to a fantastic library, cinema, theatre and arts complex. Plus, the town has some beautiful boutiques and specialist shops on Bondgate that you won’t find on the high street.

The rail line continues onwards from here as the heritage Weardale Railway to Eastgate in Weardale and is well worth a trip.
